Privacy Policy for The Cellar

This Privacy Policy applies to The Cellar (wall plaque for iPad) and Cellar Companion (iPhone & Android). The Cellar is a home cellar app, not a data business. This page explains what the app stores, where it lives, and who can see it.

The short version: your cellar data is yours, it's shared only with the household you invite, we don't run ads, we don't use third-party analytics or tracking, and we never sell data.

What we collect, and why

Age confirmation

The first time you open the app you enter your birth year to confirm you're of legal drinking age. It is stored only on your device and is never transmitted to us or anyone else.

Account information

If you sign in with Apple or Google, we receive your name and email address from that provider (with Sign in with Apple you may hide your email) through Firebase Authentication. Your name is used to sign your tasting notes; your account links your household across devices. You can also use the app as a guest with no account — a random anonymous identifier is created instead.

Your cellar data

Bottles, fridges and shelves, tasting notes, drinking history, wishlist entries, custom tasting words, and your household's name and invite code are stored in Google Cloud Firestore (operated by Google, our infrastructure provider) so they sync between your devices. Access is restricted by security rules to signed-in members of your household — nobody else, including other users of the app, can read them.

Label photos

When you photograph a bottle label, the text on it is read on your device (using on-device text recognition — the photo is not sent to a server to be read). Photos are stored on the device that took them. If cloud photo sync is enabled in a future update, photos will be stored in your household's private storage under the same access rules as the rest of your cellar.

Camera and photo library

Camera and photo library access is used only when you choose to photograph or pick a label image, and for nothing else.

What we don't do

  • No advertising, and no advertising identifiers.
  • No third-party analytics or tracking SDKs.
  • No selling, renting, or sharing of your data with third parties, other than the infrastructure listed above.
  • No reading of your photos beyond the images you explicitly capture or pick for a label.

Sharing within a household

The Cellar is built for households. Anyone who joins your household with your invite code sees the shared cellar: bottles, notes (signed with each taster's name), history, and wishlist. Share your invite code only with people you want inside your cellar.

Where data lives and how it moves

Synced data is stored in Google Cloud (Firestore) in the United States and cached on your devices so the app works offline. Data in transit is encrypted (TLS); data at rest is encrypted by Google Cloud.

Your choices and deletion

  • Everything in the app can be edited or deleted in the app — bottles, notes, wishlist items, custom words, photos.
  • Deleting the app from a device removes the local cache and your on-device age confirmation and photos.
  • Cellar Companion also provides in-app account deletion under Household → Delete account.
  • To delete your account and your household's synced data entirely, contact us at hello@roughingitlabs.com and we will remove it.

Children

The Cellar is intended for people of legal drinking age and includes an age gate. It is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under the legal drinking age.

Changes

If this policy changes materially, we'll update this page and note it in the app's release notes.
